Start Small
Students need some time to explore the site. Give them the opportunity to play with avatars, ask silly questions, and simply learn the ins and outs. Remind them to choose their passwords wisely (and always keep a copy).
Give students a Non-Academic Platform
Students need a space to just be kids and chat with one another. It's an opportunity to interact with peers in a different setting. With boundaries, this space builds trust and relationships, strengthening the classroom community.
Keep the Momentum Going
Encourage students to post on the site. Badges are a great reinforcement and give students goals.
Train Teachers
The more teachers that are active on the site, the broader the audience. Students love asking teachers questions and getting feedback. This is an opportunity for teachers to have positive interactions and get to know their students. When teachers feel comfortable navigating the Edmodo site and see the value of social networking in the classroom, they will be more active.
Communicate with Parents
Encourage parents to be part of your Edmodo community. This is a great way for them to get more involved in the classroom and feel more comfortable having their kids on the site.
Expand Student's Audience
The more teachers, staff and students that are members of a group, the larger the audience. Students thrive on having their voice heard. They need to know that their thoughts, opinions, and ideas matter. The more people to hear them, the greater the motivation.
Review Guidelines Often
Classroom and school Edmodo guidelines and protocols must be continually revisited. Students must be aware of what and how they post. There are also strict guidelines to ensure student's safety. This is a safe environment for kids to learn what should and should not be posted on a social networking site. Take advantage of any teachable moment.
